The inheritance
The present city of Tarquinia, rich in medieval monuments, is located in Lazio, about fifty miles northwest of Rome. It has at the National Museum one of the largest collections of Etruscan. Depart from the museum also guided tours of the beautiful painted tombs of the necropolis in the vicinity of the new city.
Among the exhibits in the museum include: the sarcophagi, the funerary objects found in the nearby cemetery, which include, among other things, vessels of every type and origin; Ara decorations belonging to the temple of the Queen, and finally some painted tombs, moved here for save them from destruction.

The ancient city of Tarquinia (in Etruscan TarXna) stood on the hill of La Civita, a short distance from the new town. Very little remains of the urban fabric of the city: the remains of massive walls of the fourth century BC, composed of square blocks of limestone, which had a length of about five miles, and the remains of a temple of the first half of the fourth century BC known as the Queen Ara (Ara reginae). 
The importance of Tarquinia is demonstrated by the legend that the city was founded by the mythical hero Tyrrhenus Tarchon companion, founder of the Etruscans. Until the beginning of the sixth century BC the city was a center of secondary importance. Since then, thanks to the intensification of business contacts with Greece grew in importance, so as to become the fourth century BC one of the major cities of the Etruscan League. Between the end of the fourth century and the beginning of the third century BC Tarquinia, the summit of its power, clashed repeatedly with Rome. Output loss from these wars (281 BC) had to give up the coastal domains, including its port, a few miles from the city proper. Isolated from sea trade began, Tarquinia a decline that would have been unstoppable.
