The Palace of the Popes
Loggia of the Palace of the Popes (from the Piazza di San Lorenzo)
The center offers a myriad of Viterbo as well as important works of art. The most famous is certainly the Papal Palace, built between 1255 and 1266 on the hill of St. Lawrence to protect the pontiff, with the famous balcony formed in one side by seven arches supported by slender paired columns that intersect to form an elegant entablature. From the loggia one enters the great hall of the Conclave, the scene of the famous election of Pope Clement X.

The Cathedral of San Lorenzo
Close to the Palace of the Popes stands the Cathedral, dedicated to San Lorenzo. The Cathedral was built in Romanesque style in the twelfth century, was located on the ground where the eighth century a small church dedicated to San Lorenzo.

The medieval city
Not far from Piazza del Duomo stands the old medieval quarter, preserved almost intact, San Pellegrino: here we find many homes with profferlo, the stair-case typical of Viterbo. Also interesting is the Piazza del Plebiscite, better known by Viterbo as "Town Square" which houses the Town Hall and the Prefecture. At the end of the course, up the hill from Piazza Verdi, is the church of Santa Rosa, built on a small hill next to the so-called "House of the patron saint of Viterbo." Worthy of mention also the Piazza della Rocca, Great Fountain Square, the tower of the Branch called the Beautiful Gate Faul Galliana close to the walls with 2 main gates (Porta Fiorentina and Porta Romana). Is the ancient church of San Silvestro.
